How HD 3D television works

This isn't your grandfather's 3D.

Some of you may remember those old 3D movies that you watched with those paper red-and-blue glasses. The images didn't look 3D so much as they were just plain fuzzy. 3D has come a long, long way since then.

The 3D broadcasts you'll see on DIRECTV employ a technology whereby left- and right-oriented images flash quickly on your screen in sync with the opening and shutting of the left and right lenses of your active-shutter 3D glasses. The image doesn't flicker because the alternating images flash 120 times a second in each eye, too fast for your brain to notice. This results in a high-defintion 3D picture that rivals the 3D picture you see at the movie theaters today!
